Description: Research within competitive environments, empowers investigators for the next step in their professional live while increasing the reputation of host institutions. More than 10 years ago, the University of Oxford launched the PASCAL Visual Object Classes challenges. Since, many online platforms have emerged that host Artificial Intelligence (AI) Competitions, providing standardised benchmark, enabling investigators to test their algorithms using common datasets following the same rules and generally using data from stakeholders with real-world open challenges. In this talk, a strategy is presented that highlights the pros and cons of conducting research within competitive environments. The talk will cover the most popular competition platforms, how they operate, their recurrent research topics and how this strategy can possibly support future research.
