The project aims to research generic Bayesian models to deal with fusion, multimodality, conflicts, and ambiguities in perception.
Its workload will be divided between research and prototyping in the robotics field, to be conducted at the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR), and studies and experiments in the psychophysical research field, to be conducted at the Institute for Biomedical Research on Light and Image (IBILI), both in the University of Coimbra.
The project's programme expected outcomes are:
. an exhaustive study of models that describe the human multimodal perception cognitive system under a Bayesian framework;
. the development of artificial systems based on these models and the construction of a robotic prototype using these systems.
Results of testing these artificial systems in real-world situations are also hoped to generate enough feedback to help understand how to improve the quality of life for people suffering from disorders related to multimodal perception.
